Micronutrient deficiencies in Cambodia are among the highest in the Asia Pacific Region. A2Z is working with the Ministry of Health’s National Nutrition Program (NNP) to prevent and control micronutrient deficiencies in vulnerable populations.
Sustainable Vitamin A Supplementation
The A2Z project supports the National Nutrition Program in planning, implementing, and monitoring a standard national twice-yearly vitamin A supplementation program. Program sustainability is strengthened through capacity building in the use of data collected through the national health, monitoring, and information system to track vitamin A coverage; generation of community demand for services through behavior change communication; facilitated planning and coordination of the twice-yearly supplementation program; and attention to supplies management. Activities are implemented through provincial and district health services in partnership with NGOs such as Helen Keller International, World Vision, and other local organizations.
Scaling Up Maternal Anemia Reduction Packages
The project supports the NNP to increase awareness of the importance of maternal anemia, including assistance in drafting standard guidelines for iron/folic acid supplementation for pregnant and postpartum women and drafting and implementing a national anemia policy and operations strategy.
Developing Child Anemia Reduction Packages
The project supports the NNP to test the effectiveness of an anemia reduction package for older infants that includes a micronutrient-fortified powder (Sprinkles) and improved infant feeding interventions. The results will be used to guide policy development on child anemia reduction. This study is co-funded with the World Bank and supported by a number of agencies.
Other activities include assessing the feasibility of scaled-up food fortification (such as fish sauce), providing technical support and training to enhance the management and technical capacity of the NNP and health workers, identifying and addressing micronutrient supply constraints, and providing state-of-the-art technical updates.
